Mary
Beglan’s interest in genealogy took root in
the early 1990s, when she began tracing her Irish
and English ancestry. While studying for a Certificate
in Genealogy at University College, Dublin, she
began professional research. In 1999 she obtained
her Certificate, and in 2000 was admitted to APGI
membership. Before becoming a professional genealogist
Mary worked in the insurance business for over twenty-five
years, qualifying as a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance
Institute (F.C.I.I.).
Mary
is the current Editor of the Irish Family History
Society and was its Hon. Treasurer, 2000-2003, and
Hon. Chairman 2003-2008. She was on the Council
of APGI from 2001 to 2005, and was its Hon. Secretary
from 2003 to 2005. She is a founder member of the
Certificate Genealogists' Alumni Group (CGAG) and
was a committee member from its inception in June
1999 to 2004, during which time she represented
them on the Council of Irish Genealogical Organisations
(CIGO).
As
an APGI member Mary participated in the Genealogy
Advisory Service at the National Library from 2002
to 2006, and at the National Archives since its
inception in 2003 to 2006. She has delivered many
talks, including a number on the use of the Internet
in genealogy, and has written various articles,
including web site reviews for the Irish Family
History Society web site and the CIGO Newsletter.
Mary was a speaker at the 2006 Federation of Genealogical
Societies Conference, Boston, USA.
As
Mary’s interest in her own ancestry extends
to England, she is a member of the Society of Genealogists
and of the Kent Family History Society, and visits
the London record repositories regularly.
